Tonight’s Tech Check: Common PC Problems
PROBLEM: CRAZED PRINTER SYNDROME
This happens way more than it should. I’ve known several people who’ve had a printer start spewing out garbled pages for no real reason.
SOLUTION: When this happens power down your printer. While it’s off, go to Start - and either Printers and Faxes or go to Control Panel and then to Printers and Faxes - double click on your printer and make sure a print job hasn’t been hung up (if so, right click on it and cancel print job). If the issue is not resolved with this, then Power the printer down again - go back into Printers and Faxes - delete the printer and reinstall it (you may even want to check the manufacturer’s website for an updated driver before re-install) - then power back up.
PROBLEM: VIDEO PLAYS PICTURE W/OUT SOUND OR VICE VERSA
When this happens it is usually a codec issue Want to know more about codecs? CLICK HERE
SOLUTION: Go to our DOWNLOAD PAGE and download the K-Lite Mega Codecs Pack. After installation attempt to view your video again and you should have both audio and video. If not, check your video card driver in the device manager (right click on your My Computer icon - select properties and then the hardware tab ) and make sure it’s working properly.
PROBLEM: YOUR PC STARTS SLOWLY
There are numerous reason for this, we offer one below. However, if the following solution doesn’t speed you up then proceed directly to our SECURITY PAGE and follow step by step the directions.
SOLUTION: Go to Start - Run - and type in msconfig - hit enter. The screen that comes up will have several tabs. Click on the Startup tab. This will bring up a list programs that start up when you boot up your system. Some programs don’t need to startup on boot and if you uncheck those boxes.. hit APPLY then OKAY - then re-boot your system. The first time it will inform you that you have a selective startup chosen. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE BOX and then click okay. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO UNCHECK SOMETHING IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHAT IT IS! There are some programs that have to load on startup. If you are unsure about a program here are two ways to find out about it: 1) Go to www.answersthatwork.com and click on their task list - then find the program you were wondering about. 2) Do a Google search for the program file that is loading and find out what it is. (i.e. svchost.exe, etc.)
PROBLEM: A PIN ON A CABLE OR DRIVE CONNECTION IS BENT
SOLUTION: Find a mechanical pencil with a large enough tip or take the ink out of a pen and use the shell - then place it over the bent pen and GENTLY straighten the pin out. THESE CAN BE DELICATE SO BE CAREFUL NOT TO BEND THE OTHER WAY OR IT MAY RESULT IN A BREAK.
